I am 21 years old and lived in and around the Bangor area my whole life until recently moving to Portland where I work at a couple of local bars and restaurants. I will be finishing up my degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in Ecology at the University of Southern Maine this fall. When I'm not working or at school, I enjoy swimming, bouldering, hiking, meditating and yoga. I don't consider art a hobby because to me it is more of a commitment. Art is the language I speak and I include it in everything I do. To contact me, please use abigailtormey@gmail.com

As a Bangor resident, and stencil artist, I really enjoy sharing my work with the city. In the last couple years, composing and drawing stencils, cutting them out, and controlling a can of spray paint are skills that have enabled me to reflect the visual design I see emanating from all of creation. This Design that is the phenomena of light reflection off objects in 3D space as perceived by the human eye/mind is infinitely fascinating to me, and what I am attempting to portray as faithfully as possible. CornApple is a human toy box. It is also the name Art Gowie signs to most of his work.

His illustrations and paintings(and the occasional small sculpture or stuffed toy) tend toward the cartoonish and whimsical. Subjects include robots, stuffed animals, puppets, bears, monkeys, martians, mythical critters, old toys, octopi, and birds. Oh, and more robots. He will paint on just about anything that will hold still long enough and enjoys working directly on canvas sneakers particularly. While he is constantly learning how to use new techniques and materials, during the past 2 years he has developed a fondness for painting on wood shingles and planks, often building up and sanding down many layers of paint in a single piece for a weathered, almost fabric look.

Currently he is working on a handful of commission pieces as well as building a portfolio of smaller wood paintings, prints, stickers, and toys to show in local galleries and businesses on and near Mount Desert Island, Maine.

Examples of his work can be seen at

facebook.com/cornappleimages

and on Instagram under the name CORNAPPLE.

My name is Jill Gardner. I am a chalk and mural artist living in Bangor, Maine. Ever since I was a young girl I have been inspired and gotten energized around the creating of art. My very first murals and signs adorned the four walls of my bedroom as a teenager. After graduating from the University of Maine with a teaching degree, I found ways to bring art into the classroom. Not until I worked a part-time job at a coffee shop and started drawing on chalkboards did I realize I just might be able to create, draw, paint and design for a living! My bold chalkart and murals can now be seen in coffee shops, restaurants, salons and theatres in the greater Bangor area.

My name is Joey Manning and I live in Orono, ME. I grew up in Florida just off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and I've been drawing since I was very little. Art has been in my family for a very long time, and so has the sport/art of skateboarding. To bring these two together in a way to help donate to have a place to skate, is very cool. I am going to be starting my freshman year with the goal of getting a major in Studio Art, and possibly teaching art to elementary students. I see this as a way to get my name out, and also just do what I love doing.

My name is Jojo.

And you will notice this is a lot like the bio I wrote for the Olympics

For those of you who know my work,

You know my gallery includes:

Poses modeled by the octopus in the upstairs bathroom

Videos of me painting on top of loud vegetables at the grocery stores [yeah, not the best idea]

And me marching around dressed as a turnip in the festival of lights.

As you can see I have a tight schedule in the arts,

And I would like to thank the ghost taxi driver

The gardener who planted a light bulb in the ground,

And as always, Gumby.

Medium: Lazer etching

Matt McEntee is interested in many things. As an undergraduate he designed his major course of study with a mind towards social entrepreneurship. He studied business, agriculture and mechanical engineering technology. His minor was in studio art. Matt is interested in the creative integration of broad and diverse knowledge to promote social existence that is sustainable, just and healthy.

He has long held the belief shared by many in intermedia that nothing is beyond the bounds of art: all media and techniques are fair game. Recently he has become interested in social based practice; that is to say, the community is the media. His current project is the city of Bangor, a place and people that he loves. Bangor is undergoing a cultural renaissance and Matt is acting with others to strategically to shape the new face of Bangor. His recent works have included the facilitation of novel sporting events, working in soup kitchens and making Valentine's cards anonymously for strangers. Matt does make more conventional works of art such as paintings, sculpture, drawing and photography but he doesn't do this very often. He has also been exploring barter as a way to enrich the economy by broadening channels for exchange and perceptions of value. Matt believes that Joseph Beuys was right: everyone is an artist. He shares the belief with Beuys that creativity can be used as a liberating force. Also the special-making lens of 'art' has the wonderful ability to transform everyday experience into the fantastical. He is trying to find ways to connect people with their human potential and capacities.

Born and raised in Maine, Rebecca Krupke is a seventh generation 'Mainer'. Rebecca's memories are filled with images of playing in her grandparents' attic. She spent many days amongst unfinished canvases of her grandfather, Edward Bailey, who studied art at the Portland School of Art. Seeing the joy on her grandfather's face as he spoke of his days painting in art school planted a seed in Rebecca's heart to carry on where he left off. Each artwork she creates embodies a feeling of rebirth in content and emotion for the subtle, sometimes overseen, moments in life.

Rebecca has shown in over twenty International and National Juried Exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland and Italy. Rebecca's artwork has been published in 'Words & Images', a book of artwork and poetry published in Portland, Maine and 'The Buzz', Prince Edward Island's Arts and Entertainment magazine as well as numerous juried exhibition catalogues.

In March 2007, Rebecca and Shirley Greer created a duel exhibition at the Galleria Sottoportego in conjunction with the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy. The exhibit housed in the old city of Venice contained prints and images of the home Rebecca grew up in, along with sound art to accompany each painting. As a Visiting Artist, Krupke also co-taught, during her three weeks at the school, a course on three different Monoprinting technics.

Her work concentrates on a moment in time. Drastic control of light sets a mood in the viewer. She often concentrates on homes as they represent an extension of the family....in the function of protection and the preservation of childhood memories.

"Old homes have a way of softly whispering to those who enter.

If you listen, you'll hear about the lives that were lived within her walls."

I can’t seem to recall a specific moment where I decided, “this is what I want to do”, all I seem to stubble across when navigating the crowded corners of my mind is the fact that when I was a child I simply put pencil (or in some cases crayon) to paper, and since then, no one has really tried to stop me. Well maybe that one time when I drew a blue line across my mother’s pristine white walls there was an attempt to halt my creative direction, if only so as to not enter the realm of vandalism.

Over the years my artwork has become a place of sanctuary. Edgy, raw, and bold strokes whisper all my secrets to the eager ears of canvas, transforming whitewashed surface into the guardian to whom I am able to confide in. With varying mediums paving the road of my childhood advances into the art world I often maintain embroidered elements within my larger works, tying in my roots as an apprentice to fiber artist Tree Heckler. The finished image is captured internal truths and emotions transcribed through visual mediums as a means of catharsis. Having always had great difficulty in comprehending and dealing with emotions in a constructive manner, watered down acrylic and ink have become a translator. Instruments playing the sweet melody of soft color and unbridled line work to create a bridge for weighted narratives and elusive sentiment to cross, merging with the visual realm.

My works often stem from poetic and lyrical inspirations. These serve as stepping-stones for the stubborn and tangled thoughts that stalk the corners of my conscious mind. Plaguing me with unwarranted discomfort until they are freed from shackles as two-dimensional organic thoughts portrayed on canvas. Often I am not entirely clear on the meaning behind apiece until I am able to step back from it and hear my guardian whispering secrets back into my ears in ancient language.

complex interpretation to be powerful.

Steven Brooks, I'm an artist from Casco ME, I used recycled material to make my art.  The content of my work is mainly wildlife and my interpretations of it.  Wildlife is nice to work with because it doesn't really voice it's opinions to you of your portrayal of it.  Recycled materials give me the freedom to create and the satisfaction of giving something a second chance.  Like leaves buried under snow that become free and re-animated by a spring breeze.

Hello Art Auction Bidders, there have been a few questions that have been brought up about the auction site that we hope to clear up in this email:

If you clicked on the auction from April 7th 6:00pm to April 8th 1:30am, you were redirected to a page saying something like “oops, sorry this page doesn’t exist”. That page showed up because bidding opened on April 8th at 1:30am.

If you have bid at the auction site from April 8th 1:30am to April 9th 12:30am you may have been wondering why your bids didn’t show up after you made them. The default auction engine for the auction is WordPress plugin, which bases their auctions on a maximum bid algorithmic system that takes the last two bidding prices and sets a max bid price that the next person has to beat. This system wasn’t very comprehensive, so we switched the default standard bidding system to the traditional bidding system where buyers will only have to bid more than the last person did. This change happened April 9th at 12:30am, for the sake of usability. At that time you received an email from us telling you that you would be able to purchase the board using Paypal. Please disregard that email. The reason you received it was because we needed to end all the auctions in order to change the bidding engine and WordPress automatically sends out a winning bid email at the end of a closed auction to the last person. We understand your confusion on the auction page, but unfortunately the premature emails could not be avoided in order to change the bidding style. We are sorry for this disruption of the auction, and we will notify you of any future changes.

Currently the auction page is set up in the correct bidding style and each bid is being marked on the page. There is only one other small problem with the page that has been brought to our attention. Each auction states that Kate Dawson is winning the auction although she has only bid on one piece. This is a problem that the developers of the plugin are currently working on and will be fixed within the week. However, the bids from each person are still being recorded properly if you check the “bids” button on the auction. Rest assured that all bid prices are displayed accurately on the page since the change of bidding styles on April 9th at 12:30am.

We understand that bidders are concerned about the status of their bids and where the information is going. We setup the auction page to take the least amount of personal information as possible since the ending bids online are being used to start the live auction in May. The only personal information you give out during a bid is your email address, which can only be seen by AJ Olsen, the developer of the site, and Josh Kaffer, who receives the emails at boardbangor@gmail.com (the mailing location for the auction). Even if you are winning an auction when it closes online it does not necessarily mean that you will win the board because it can still be outbid at the live auction. Again, if you received an email asking you to pay for the board on Paypal, please ignore that email.

Please remember that the auction is a month long, ending on May 13th around 12:00pm and the boards will be shown in various businesses in Bangor, Old Town, and Orono. You can keep track of the bids on a certain piece by clicking the “watch” button on an auction. This will send you emails informing you of any new bids on the auction. On the 15th of May, the boards will be brought to a live auction and bid on using the end bids from the website. Thank you for your interest in the Unsanctioned Art Auction and we appreciate your cooperation.

If you have any other questions about the auction email me at arthur.olsen1@gmail.com

Is there a list of the various businesses where the boards are being shown?

    • admin says:

That will be put in the description as soon as the boards are up in the shops. Most likely in the next couple days though

  2. admin says:

Yes, all boards are up in shops for viewing until May 13th at which time they will be taken down and bid off at a live auction on the 15th

  3. This is so rad. If I wasn’t as strapped as I am I see 3 decks I’d be shootin for. Best of luck with this. I hope they all sell for a $1000 or more. The world needxs moire skateparks. As fewer and fewer kids are interested in team sports anymore, they need a safe place to express themselves through the art form of SKATING. Even 57 year old kids like me lol.Remember the next Tony Hawk Foundation Grant semester is July 1st, I think. We jumped in on the last one, didn’t receive it. We will be submitting again. Good Luck my friends. What we do is difficult, but so worth the effort.
