How to Create Custom Tabs for Facebook Business Pages

facebook_custom_tabsGoing along with the Facebook theme, this article is a great tutorial on how to re-organize information on your Facebook page using tabs. The previous article states that businesses should not spread out their company to other more specific pages, but what if you want a user to have that specific information, interaction, or unique feeling when visiting a Facebook page? Well the Facebook developers have created a new application that business can now use to create custom tabs on their page which has not only solved the issue of trying to put too much specific content on one Facebook page, but it also gives users a way to better interact with the page.

Web Users Getting More Ruthless

Dr. NielsenDr. Nielsen makes the argument that search engines “rule the web” based on statistics that show that web users are much less patient with websites, using search engines to bring them within the website directory to the content they want. However, I dont think that people are more impatient with websites than they used to be, I think that people just want to be rewarded for going on to a website. By rewarded I dont mean given something physical, I mean that they want satisfaction and interaction from the site. For example, facebook and instagram are popular more or less for their “like” buttons; the more likes you get the more you will want to post on these sites. Being able to comment on information is also a good way to keep people on a site, whether it be by contributing themselves or reading other people’s contributions. I think that a static site is as deadly to users attention as an interactive site is rewarding feeling to the same user.

What SEO Isn’t

seoIn a lot of freelance front end job postings i see that people are looking for people with experience in search engine optimization and always assumed that it would be important to learn in the web design community. However, the author of this article makes some very good points about the over exaggerated “necessity” of SEOs. One of the most important thing he mentioned was that SEOs, “can be so close to marketing and yet remain entirely oblivious of it” which made me realize that SEOs dont actually create any sort of campaign or name for their businesses, they are just sort of a dated way of keyword search that may have been useful in a web 1.0 world. It has been proven many times that keyword optimization in websites can be fooled in search engines so where is this idea of SEOs being supremely important for web developers coming from? I think that for the most part people are just uneducated about usefulness of SEOs and web developers looking for a job just used it as a way to make them more appealing to hire than someone without SEO knowledge. I think the demand for people with SEO experience will stay around for the next few years, but eventually social media expertise will take over.
